Recently Colossal Biosciences, a company based in Dallas, reported that with the use of genetic engineering and surrogate dogs they now have three dire wolfs. This would mean they have brought a species back from extinction one that has been extinct for 12,000 years.
However, these pups may not be true dire wolfs as the DNA from dire wolves, that died that long ago, is beyond usable for cloning. What the scientists did was spliced DNA fragments with grey wolf DNA and reportedly the result are pups with identical characteristics of the original dire wolves.
